Roy Baker: Mr. May, Male Model of the Month

Our Mr. May, Roy Baker!

Where are you from?

When did you start modeling?

I had my first photo shoot for a tuxedo company at the age of 17, from then on I decided that modeling was something I could be good at and decided to give it a shot.

• What drives/drove you to pursue a career in the modeling/fashion industry?

Besides loving  fashion, I believe joining  this industry is a great way to meet and network with remarkable individuals. Traveling is a bonus as well. But what really pushes me to make a name for myself in this industry is that I’m a firm believer in getting what you desire. No dream should be considered “too big”, this has been a dream of mine for a while now its time to make it my reality.

• What are some of your best/worst experiences modeling?

With every job comes benefits and disadvantages, but over all it what i want. with that said I will have to say  the traveling aspect of it is a great experience, and the worst will have to be constantly being compared to others. I had to teach myself to love who i am, and that my friend is what separates the best for the rest.

• What advice would you give to hopeful models?

My advice to everyone not just models is to love who you are from within, shoot for the stars, and if people ask why your reply should be why not?.lastly  do what makes you happy , that will make your life more meaningful

• What is your dream job?

I would have to say my dream job will have to be being featured on a Calvin Klein campaign, dreamed of that job since I was a little boy

What would you consider your best feature?

In my opinion I don’t believe that i have one striking feature but the combination of them all is what i love and completes me.

How do you stay in Model shape?

I train five days out of the week.I love working out whether is it in the working out at home, in the gym,or outdoors. my diet is also very strict I try to stay away for bad carbs , but I do have a bit of a late night sweet tooth which im working on.

KRAVE Her: Rihanna covers American Vogue

Rihanna for Vogue, Annie Leibovitz

It just doesn’t get much better than this.  Amongst only a handful of women of color, Rihanna graces the 10th Annual Shape issue, shot by one of my favorite photographers, Annie Leibovitz (Beyonce Knowles graced the shape issue as well…what are they trying to say?).  Either way this is huge for the R&B/Pop star.

Kudos to Rihanna!

Darius Peek: “Mr. January” Male Model of the Month

With the New Year we’re hoping to give you MORE with our blog and web presence. One of our most popular features is the male/female monthly model features and 2011 will bring you some more new and amazing talents.  Here to bring int he new year the RIGHT way is Detroit’s own, Darius Peek, Mr. January.

Where are you from?

I’m a 313 baby all day, lol.  My physical address is in the city of Highland Park but I all but live in the city of Detroit, so I guess you could say I’m a dual citizen of both as we call them locally “The Park” and of course “The D”.

When did you start modeling?

I started modeling the second I came out of what I have come to know her as my mom, lol, but my official debut onto the modeling scene came in 2004 at the tender age of 17.  My very first booking was Seagram’s Gin promo for a local promotions and marketing agency, whose owner is beyond gorgeous, whom we’ll call “G” is an ex model and if you were to see her you’d see why, who by the way now that I’m 6 years past legal should give me call so I can take her to dinner, lol.

What drives/drove you to pursue a career in the modeling/fashion industry?

I have always been a people person and kind of glutton for attention, and the money is pretty good too in the fashion industry, lol.  My drive comes from my love of all things fashion and my need to be the best.  I don’t think I could adequately explain the feeling I get right before I step out from the curtain into the bright lights and eyes of onlookers sitting to the left and right of a runway I’m about to walk but not just walk but own.  The modeling industry is naturally competitive, some might even say over competitive due to both the level of talent present and literally the sheer number of people all doing the same thing and all going after the same limited goals, gigs.  I am naturally competitive and always trying to be the best at everything and not the best do to the lack competition but the best because I was better than the competition. so what better place to showcase my natural affinity for competition.

What are some of your best/worst experiences modeling?

The best experiences in my modeling career so far are honestly the feeling I get whenever I get booked for a job.  The feeling that I get knowing I was chosen over so many other to represent an ideal, or fantasy, or physical manifestation of another’s aspiration is truthfully kind of arousing, for those few minutes speaking with an agent or director or reading an email that I am wanted, in demand, sought after enough to be paid to be merely looked at is intoxicating.  I pride myself on being humble but at those moment I feel the universes is giving me its brief window to bask in my self-proclaimed greatness, to indulge in all sorts of narcissism and self-indulgence free of the worry of backlash or jinxing my accomplishment before returning to reality.  I think to be a successful model everybody has to feel at least a small sense of irrational self-absorbed bravado.  Its fun at times and definitely necessary with the amount of regular rejection and cold hard truthful critique the average model will face throughout their career, besides if you don’t think you’re the best no body else will either.

My worst experiences have been my loss of jobs due to my lack of willingness to undermine my morals, ethics, and values to succeed in this industry, or the loss of friends; well-being that hindsight is 20/20 so-called friends due to my successes and their shortcomings.

What advice would you give to hopeful models?

To all you new models who want to succeed in this industry the first thing you need to do to succeed is to be honest with yourself about your chances at success and what you can bring to the table that will allow you to stand out amongst the crowd, next get a thick skin and don’t let rejection and what others think of you be the blueprint of who you will be, and lastly work hard, grind, claw tooth and nail 24/7/365 until you achieve your accepted level of achievement.  It’s a dog eat dog world out there and in this industry if you not eating you getting ate.

What is your dream job?

I have two dream jobs one I’m sure anybody who has read this far could guess, I want to be a world renown supermodel.  My second dream job, a top investment banker or hedge fund manager at the greatest investment bank in the world, Goldman Sachs.

What would you consider your best feature?

My best features I would say is my facial bone structure in particular my jaw line.

What are some of the jobs/campaigns you’ve been booked for or are recognized in?

I have done a Pelle Pelle campaign (regional), Chicago Fashion Week, a campaign for MGM (regional), and PNC (national), and soon to be a featured cover model for KRAVE Magazine, among other things, lol…

What do you do to stay in ‘Model’ Shape?

My regimen to stay in shape honestly consists  of working out 4 of 7 days of the week and a strict diet of McDonald’s hamburgers, pizza, Krispy Kreme donuts, and Gatorade, no really, lol ….

How can you be booked?

I can be booked by calling my business line @ 3135493424 and please leave a message if I am unable to answer, “NO REALLY” and my email

Ha! We like how you snuck in “KRAVE Magazine” and your aspiration of a corporate financial career.

We salute Mr. Darius Peek for continuing to live his dreams and reach his goals, a true KRAVE Man.

Manuel Mendez: “Mr. December” Male Model of the Month

Manuel Mendez

Our male model for December is the Dominican dynamo Mr. Mendez. The latin looker is ramping up to show the fashion world what its been missing.

Where are you from?

I’m from the Dominican Republic, a nation on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean region.

When did you start modeling?

I started modeling right after high school..

What drives/drove you to pursue a career in the modeling/fashion industry?

What drove me was a friend of mine, going to school to be a photographer who asked to take pictures of me for a school project. After seeing those images  my friends and others started to tell me that I should look into modeling. I hesitated for sometime because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue modeling. I never thought of myself as being a model because all through high school I suffered with acne. After seeing the images, words of encouragement, support and inspiration from friends and family, my confidence level and self-esteem improved. I then decided to give it a try.

This industry lacks of a lot of things. I noticed that there aren’t any male dominican models out there that we recognize. It’s good to see female models like Arlene Sosa and Rose Cordero.  They are two dominican girls that are internationally working on covers of magazine and campaigns. Seeing them drives me even more to keep pushing! They have opened many doors for other female models. I think it’s about time for a male dominican model to do the same.

What are some of your best/worst experiences modeling?

My best experiences in modeling was shooting in my country Dominican Republic.

I would have never thought in a million years that I would shoot out there, never crossed my mind. It was on the beach, so amazing!

What advice would you give to hopeful models?

In my opinion, the most important thing  is to believe in yourself.  There’s that voice inside of you that tells you right from wrong. That same voice tells you what you like and don’t like and what you are to become.

Everyone has this voice of reason and its there  for you to listen and follow. Its like when you plant a tree; that tree is not going to grow unless you water it and take good care of it. So apply that to your dreams and goals! Stay on top of them and you will see them grow.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is to be a model, internationally, and to be the face of a major brands.

How can you be booked?

For now, all  bookings can be made through my website I’ve yet to sign with an agency, but I’m currently shopping around.

What would you consider your best feature?

People tell me my lips and my eyes, so I would go with that. I have a scar on left side  of my cheek that I personally like….lol

What are some of the jobs/campaigns you’ve been booked for or are recognized in?

I have yet to book that campaign that I would be recognized for, but I’m working on that so hopefully the world will see it soon. I would say for now because that’s were I got my first recognition..

How do you stay in “model shape”?

Definitely a good healthy way of eating, that’s number one. On top of that I workout a lot.  I take a total body conditioning class, abdominal class and boxing at the gym at least four times a week.

We wish you all the luck in the world Mr. Mendez and KRAVE will support you in your journey.
