Say What?! New Nivea ad: Racist?

The internet is ablaze this morning over the new Nivea total body products ad. The re-civilize ad states “Look Like You Give A Damn”, showcasing a groomed African American male grasping a beheaded African American man with a full fro and facial hair. WOW.

I can see what they were trying to acheive BUT…yeah…simply ill-executed.

Here’s the full article:

What do you guys think?

Congratulations to Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon!

One of our favorite couples gave birth to their twins, a boy and a girl, on their anniversary, April 30th.  How sweet! #Dembabies are here and we are happy for the Cannons!  We can’t wait to see the first pictures and learn the names of the soon to be industry royalty.

I personally, Kenneth Tavon Hibbler (Creative Director of KRAVE Magazine), am rarely overwhelmed by the artistry of entertainers and artists in today’s industry.  However, I recently fell in love with a trio of soul singers, KING.

My dear friend Frances Jaye (DJ extraordinaire and all-around beautiful person), included KING’s “Supernatural” on her Soul in the City Vol. 4 mix.  I immediately fell in love with the effortless harmonies, soulful phrases and melodies, the ethereal yet earth-shaking instrumentals… I HAD TO HAVE MORE!

So of course I went to Google and absorbed all I could about the group! 🙂

I was a bit disappointed that there were only 3 songs available BUT these 3 songs are SO MAGNIFICENT that I don’t mind at all and I cannot wait for the release of the cd.

You can purchase The Story (EP), here at Amazon for only $2.97! You can’t beat that…pass up that Starbucks for once if you feel you can’t afford it. Its well worth the investment.

You can also find out more about this amazing trio here:

And remember, support good music and real artistry. Buy don’t burn!

Enjoy…and remember, I told you so. 🙂

KRAVE Her: Rihanna covers American Vogue

Rihanna for Vogue, Annie Leibovitz

It just doesn’t get much better than this.  Amongst only a handful of women of color, Rihanna graces the 10th Annual Shape issue, shot by one of my favorite photographers, Annie Leibovitz (Beyonce Knowles graced the shape issue as well…what are they trying to say?).  Either way this is huge for the R&B/Pop star.

Kudos to Rihanna!

Rest In Peace Reggie Doucet

Reginald Doucet

I try my hardest to not make my posts on here personal…however I have to express my personal emotions for a moment. Just a few weeks ago I was speaking to a young man who’s been incredibly amped about fitness and his promising future.  We discussed his athletic career, why he’s always smiling, how he stays in shape and what he could do with KRAVE and KRAVE Fit magazines.  His name was Reginald Doucet.

Reggie was the football star who everyone knew and liked and who always cracked jokes and made people smile…and also very kind.

He was shot and killed this morning by the LAPD, while unarmed.  The reports say that he was resisting arrest and fighting the officers but for the life of me I cannot understand why they’d shoot to kill an unarmed man.

I’ve sat here for the last hour or so trying to debate if I’d post something so personal…but I believe its important for us to celebrate the life of the people who are a positive influence. And Reggie was definitely that.

We’ll miss you man…

Steph Jones – “BEAutiful” Video

I try my best not to post about subjects/talent/entertainers that I’m biased on…BUT this time I couldn’t resist.

Steph Jones has been referred to as “Hollywood’s Best Known Unknown” by TightRope magazine, which is true.  I’ve been following his career since his days as a model but because of Myspace and Twitter, many have become ‘frands’ of Mr. Jones and love his creative expression in music as well as his real-life and comedic videos. He stays true to himself…which I believe is why so many people relate to him. He’s like the crazy-cool kid in school who you think “Wow he’s a bit weird and its AMAZING!”

KRAVE salutes Mr. Ordinary (who in fact is quite extraordinary) for being himself, celebrating unique and individual style, and embracing all forms of beauty.

Check out his new video, “BEAutiful” for a visual representation of JUST that.

Sunday Sound Selection: JoJo MixTape

JoJo has definitely grown up, in both image and sound. I’ve had this mixtape for a while now but thanks to my dear friend Shatani Chouteau, I finally listened to it in entirety.

The true indication of her growth is the track “I Need A Man”, where JoJo comes out the game wailing with intense declaration that she needs a man and not a boy! Alright!

I will be jamming this for a few days!!! Check it out!

From the site: Download JoJo’s mixtape “Can’t Take That Away From Me” for free. The 11-track offering features the single “In the Dark” plus contributions from Chad Hugo of The Neptunes, Kenna, Neff-U, Oak, Beau Dozier, Jordan Gatsby, Travis Garland, and more.

Download the mixtape HERE for free. Enjoy!
